SAAM 2008
Sexual Assault Awareness Month occurs in April. Local sexual assault and domestic violence programs should be receiving information and materials from the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence soon! Information can also be found on the OCADSV website at www.ocadsv.org
Governor Kulongoski proclaims April 2008 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month! click here for an electronic copy of the proclamation.
Additional SAAM resources can be found on the National Sexual Violence Resource Center's website: www.nsvrc.org/saam
The Task Force is also engaging in several activities to increase awareness around the state, including:
-
Billboard and poster campaign - "Committing Sexual Assault is a Crime and a Choice." The campaign highlights that sexual assault is a crime that individuals choose to commit, not a misunderstanding, and that communities need to hold offenders accountable for their choices and to protect victims. The billboards will be displayed at various locations around the state and posters will be sent out to local community programs serving survivors of sexual assault. Click here for more information.
-
Bandana Project - The Bandana Project highlights the sexual exploitation of farmworker women. The project has adopted the bandana as a symbol of solidarity to end this abuse because many farmworker women use bandanas on the job to cover their faces and bodies in an attempt to ward off unwanted sexual attention that often leads to rape. The display will be held in the Oregon Department of Justice in April. The project was developed by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
- SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT! pledge drive - Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual violence. Oregon citizens and communities are being asked to sign the pledge and be part of the solution by speaking up and speaking out against behaviors and attitudes which perpetuate sexual violence and speaking up and speaking out for the promotion of healthy relationships. Click here for more information and to pledge online.

- Provide cross-training for staff who provide services for people with developmental disabilities and for victims of sexual violence.
- Have discussions within your organization about how you might address the issues of developing healthy relationships and preventing sexual violence within your own work and the population you provide services to.
