Billboard and Poster Campaign

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).  The Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force received a grant to develop a billboard and poster campaign for SAAM and Crime Victims Rights Week.  We are pleased to be able to share the following resources with local communities.

Billboard and Poster Message

The billboard and poster message -- “Committing Sexual Assault is a Crime and a Choice” highlights that sexual assault is a crime that individuals choose to commit, not a misunderstanding or unintentional act.  The poster further illuminates the kinds of crime that sexual assault includes like harassment, voyeurism, exposing, and grabbing.  These crimes have historically been referred to as nuisance (or petty) crimes but are now recognized as continuum crimes, crimes which denote a pattern of escalating sexually criminal behavior.

Media Awareness

A Press Conference with Attorney General Hardy Myers is planned for Friday, April 18th at 10:30 am in the Capitol Press Room (room 43 of the State Capitol, 900 Court Street NE, Salem, OR 97301) – you are invited to attend.  This press conference is intended to raise awareness about sexual assault, unveil the billboard and poster campaign and share with the media some of the other SAAM activities that have been undertaken by the Task Force.

The Task Force is also running a copy of the poster in the Sunday, April 20th Oregonian, “Outlook” publication.

Additionally, information will be provided to local and state media to increase media awareness of sexual assault and address reporting of sexual assault by the media.
