Law Enforcement Curriculum

Non-Stranger Sexual Assault Response and Investigation

This one-day training for law enforcement was developed by an advisory committee of law enforcement representing agencies from around the state of Oregon. The Committee identified the top training issues for law enforcement response to sexual assault and subsequently created a one-day training curriculum outline. The Committee hired retired Sergeant Joanne Archambault, leading national law enforcement expert on sexual assault investigations, to conduct the first two trainings in Portland and Medford in March 2003. Additionally, local law enforcement was selected through an application and interview process to shadow Sgt Archambault so that they would be able to conduct future one-day trainings in Oregon.

The Training is directed at new detectives (or detectives who have limited experience investigating sexual assault cases), and patrol officers. This training provides basic and intermediate information on:

  • Sexual Assault Dynamics
  • Law Enforcement Response
  • Preliminary Investigation
  • Victim Interviewing
  • Evidence Collection and Use

Victim Interviewing and Crime Scene Response Workshops

These workshops were developed by the Sexual Assault Training Institute law enforcement instructors as a follow-up to the one-day training. The workshops are intended for small groups of law enforcement who have had more experience investigating sexual assault cases or have attended the one-day training. The workshops devote minimal time to lecture and primarily focus on skill building activities using actors and props. Case scenarios include some of the typical challenges and barriers found when investigating sexual assault cases.

Understanding Sex Offenders: Tools for Interviewing & Investigation

This training is intended for law enforcement and corrections officers. Participants will hear current research on sex offender typologies based on sexual arousal data. Sex offender profile information will be provided within the context of identifying the most effective strategies for interviewing and investigation. Additional presentation topics will include how sex offenders choose their victims, coerce secrecy, and develop skills to sabotage law enforcement investigations. The training will also include investigative strategies for children accused of sexual offending.
