SANE Certification Commission

The Medical Forensic Committee of the Task Force and the Attorney General established the SANE Certification Commission in April 2004 to approve the certification of registered nurse practitioners and nurses practicing in Oregon who fulfill the requirements to become Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners. The mission of the Commission is to ensure that nurses who provide sexual assault medical care and conduct forensic examinations in Oregon have the necessary training and qualifications to do so in accordance with the best standards of care and using a victim-centered approach.

The Certification Commission, which is made up of two SANEs, two Emergency Physicians, a representative from the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) and an advocate, meet to review Oregon SANE Certification applications and certify Oregon SANEs several times a year. Nurses who receive and Oregon SANE certification are recognized by the state as sexual assault forensic nurse experts. The members of the Commission are appointed by Oregon’s Attorney General for a two-year term of office.

About the International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN)

The Forensic Nursing Certification Board (FNCB) was established in 2002 to promote the highest standards of forensic nursing practice through the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of all aspects of the certification and recertification process.

Currently the FNCB offers the SANE-A credential, a professional certification for sexual assault nurse examiners-adult/adolescent. SANE-A is the earned credential which recognizes that the highest standards of forensic nursing for sexual assault nurse examiners have been achieved. You can become certified by successfully completing the SANE-A examination.

Re-certification is available by examination on continuing education. Participants at Oregon SANE trainings are encouraged to access the IAFN website (www.iafn.org) as a forensic nursing resource and for more information on the FNCB SANE-A certification exam.
